A lot of people consider a firearm as the most important weapon in their arsenal, but in my opinion a firearm can easily be a double edged sword, if you would excuse the pun.
I try to avoid carrying a firearm and only take one if I feel am really going to need it. This has got me into trouble a couple of times, but if you carry a gun the temptation is to use it. The rapport can cause you to be facing twenty zombies when you were originally facing one or two. It can give unfounded confidence and cause you to take risks which you might otherwise avoid. They can be heavy and uncomfortable to carry for any great distance. It must be maintained to continue to function well, a dead mans click has never been more pertinent then when facing zombies. Finally of course you have to carry ammunition for it, an additional weight to sap your strength.
Don't get me wrong the guns I have have saved my life, and in certain circumstance they are quite simply indispensable, but choose to carry firearms with your eyes open, know the risks and the pitfalls, but most importantly know yourself. With a gun in your hand you are not Rambo, or any other cliched movie action hero, you can not always kill your way out of a situation. See it as a tool, a valuable tool, but still a tool. Without the correct use of the craftsman they are useless.
They can be your "one shot zombie stop", but they can also be your crutch and ultimately your tombstone.
The Remington 700 bolt action rifle, is a superb weapon, mine is in .308 and is scoped to 100 meters. It happily eats through any .308 round I care to put through it. The joy being that it is compatible with 7.62mm nato round of which, I found there is an abundance especially due to the British armies, and police forces use of it.
Mine has a 4 round box mag of which I have 6 in total. This is a small mag, which I haven't yet found to be a disadvantage, but I haven't found myself in a position where I have had to drop serious numbers of the undead. I have heard that certain stock configurations have larger magazine capacity.
Although a little on the heavy side it is reliable accurate and a proven zombie killer.
I am sure that some of you are groaning about this, firstly a .22lr, which you will be thinking is simply to small to be of any use against zombies, and secondly the model 60 is for all purposes a 'plinking' rifle, and surely no real use. Well anyone thinking that is wrong.
22lr will easily take out the undead, although not at extreme range, it is easy to silence and ammo is easy to come by. All gun shops in the UK will have some on there shelves and almost all farmers have one to control vermin making it abundant. Always an advantage.
The model 60 is an inexpensive gun, but it shoots straight and will happily shoot almost all makes and types of ammo. It is lightweight and holds 18 rounds. It doesn't have a magazine and the rounds are held in a tube under the barrel. The advantage of this is that there is no mag to snag on anything, the disadvantage is that it takes time to reload. It does need to be maintained and cleaned to reduce the chances of jamming, which can take time as it is not the easiest to strip down. At least it gives you something to do on your down time.
