Land of the dead
Dir. George A. Romero

This one falls squarely on the zombies side and raises questions about the future of the world in which we now live, society and the undead. It is a natural extension of Romero's zombie world and the previous movies he has made.

Sometime after the zombies have risen society is pulling itself back together in it's usual way with the rich at the top as corrupt as ever, and the rest at the bottom in the slums.

With plenty of zombie action the movie goes along at a good pace. It has plenty of blood and gore and shocks. This makes for a good and easily watchable film, with some fantastic scenes. Romero handles his tale with the expertise and vision of the pro we expect.

I personally enjoy this movie a great deal although I have read others opinions who don't regard it so highly. I think this is because of the social comment element which is a little heavy handed and Romero's personal take on the undead. In this film he portrays the zombies almost as 'good guys', the avenging revolutionaries coming to destroy the callow corrupt in their ivory tower. My own take is that this does not effect the enjoyment of the film and by having this sympathy toward the zombies gives another level, in the same way DOTD does with Bub. It allows us to see the humanity or lack of, in the undead and therefore in ourselves. It is not a sentiment we can always agree with, especially when all the zombies outside want to kill and eat us.

Overall, good performances and direction make this a good zombie film. The characterisation borders on horror movie cliches at times but overall handled well, and easily watchable.

Perhaps not Romero's strongest zombie flick, although still a hell of a lot better then very many others out there. It is a great film and well worth a watch, so watch it.

There are lessons to learn here, about people, groups society, government etc. The most important thing in my mind is how we really don't know that much about the undead that surround us, their survive ability and their development. What if they can develop rudimentary skills, what would that mean to us? We can not underestimate them and we must be aware of any changes in their behaviour. I really don't want to find one taking explosives to my barricades! I am being flippant, although I am sure that you know what I mean.

In a how not to do it, we should also learn the importance of headshots and how not to use fully auto firearms. Spray and pray don't cut it.

Finally, the use of fireworks, I have no clue whether it works or not, try it with care, the noise alone could give you away and bring all the local zombies your way.
